about

This was a very emotional and difficult song for Rory to write; it's inspired by, and dedicated to, one of his best friends, whose wife miscarried their first child several weeks prior to writing this song.

Miscarriage is an extremely lonely and difficult thing to deal with. It affects different couples in different ways, but the one thing many people say about their experience is that the people around them often seem only able to say or do things that don't help. This probably reflects American society's struggle with grieving well in general--we prefer to ignore death until it's impossible not to, and then we exist in denial; or perhaps we try to hide our grief beneath folk-religious platitudes (such as, "he/she is in a better place").

We need to learn how to grieve well with one another, and so this song is dedicated to all of those who have suffered miscarriage in the hopes that it provides a place of emotional resonance for at least some small percentage of the difficult psychological journey that usually accompanies miscarriage.

lyrics

I felt like I'd already met you
But I did not know your name
You were waiting in the wings before taking the stage
There is nothing I would not have done for you
If you could have stayed

A broken heart falls down like thunder and rain
Even when you wanted to go out and feel
The sun on your face again
I do not think there is even a language for
The things that we feel now

I cannot keep my eyes dry
When I walk down the stairs
All this was your kingdom
I'd give it all up, I swear
I would have let you take
The very breath from my lungs
If it meant that we could be
Together
